Birds of Paradise
We added two new birds to our yard list in 2001 - great blue heron and great-tailed grackle.  A violet-crowned hummingbird was sited many times in June and July.  Cassin's finch and red-crossbills were in the yard in late March.
The following hummingbird pictures were taken by Joe Riser during his stay at the George Walker House in 1999.  The end of July is peak hummingbird season.  These are five of the 14 species that can be seen from the George Walker House porch, kitchen window, and yard.  They are replaced at night by nectar feeding bats.
